Post Graduate Programs for Registered Nurses
St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne is committed to excellence in education and the professional development of our nursing staff. We actively support the professional development of our registered nurses in gaining a post graduate qualification in their chosen specialty.
St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne has established partnerships with various tertiary institutions and partnering hospitals offering Post Graduate courses in a number of specialties.
Courses offered in 2018
Australian Catholic University
The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing, run in conjunction with Australian Catholic University (ACU) and hospital partners, will be offered at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne in the following specialties for 2018:
Students enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing and have the opportunity to further their studies at a Graduate Diploma or Masters level. Students who choose to exit following successful completion of the first four units will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing in their chosen specialty.
NRSG636 Foundations of Specialty Practice (ACU online subject)
NRSG633 Clinical Nursing (Facilitated by St Vincent’s)
NRSG637 Foundations of Specialty Practice 2(ACU online subject)
NRSG635 Extended Clinical Nursing (Facilitated by St Vincent’s)
The courses are designed to prepare nurses for specialty practice through to an advanced practice level. The courses combine theory, evidence-based practice and research enabling the Registered Nurse to qualify with an exceptional standard of professional evidenced-based practice, skills and knowledge in their chosen specialty.
The University of Melbourne
Graduate Certificate in Nursing Practice (Cancer & Palliative Care) is offered in 2018. This course is run by the University of Melbourne in conjunction with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
This course utilises evidenced based evidence to provide the student with a sound scientific knowledge that underpins the student’s skill development in cancer and palliative care.
The Graduate Certificate is offered over one year. The course consists of theoretical components and clinical components with lectures delivered off site at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and online through University of Melbourne.
The course theoretical content is delivered by the combination of on line study and face to face delivery. Students will complete 50 credit points of study part-time over 1 year commencing in January with an online subject, and will undertake the face to face subjects with Peter MacCallum in semester 1 and semester 2. The students will remain at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the clinical practice component of the course.

Eligibility for Post Graduate Programs
Nurses registered as a Division One Nurse with AHPRA are eligible to apply. Candidates must have at least one year experience in the area of specialty they are applying for.
All Post Graduate students are supported by highly skilled specialised educators in a supportive, caring and learning environment.

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne offers a limited number of scholarships for candidates wanting to develop their academic and clinical skills in the Post Graduate programs.
Post Graduate positions for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing in the different specialties are advertised annually in September – October. Applicants will be required to apply vie the E Recruit system and will be asked to submit an application.
Applications must include:
• A covering letter
• Succinct Curriculum Vitae with two clinical referees.
All candidates will be requested to attend an interview. Successful applicants and the relevant university will receive notification of formal acceptance in late November.
