Post Graduate Programs for Registered Nurses

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne has partnerships with numerous tertiary institutions and offers Post Graduate courses in a number of specialties.

All Post Graduate students are supported by highly skilled specialised educators in provided in a supportive and caring environment.

Courses offered in 2017

Australian Catholic University

Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing, run in conjunction with Australian Catholic University (ACU), is offered at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne in the following specialties for 2017:
• Anaesthetics
• Cardiac
• Orthopaedics
• Perioperative
• Plastics and Reconstruction

Course Structure

Students enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing and have the opportunity to further their studies at a Graduate Diploma or Masters level. Students who choose to exit following successful completion of the first four units will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing in their chosen specialty.

The units that make up the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing are delivered through a variety of teaching modalities. Two Specialty Practice Units are delivered on site at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne and are facilitated by our experienced Education Consultants; these units incorporate lectures, problem-based learning (PBL), tutorials and clinical simulation.

Assessments consist of assignments, clinical practice hurdles and written examinations. The remaining two units Foundations 1 & 2 are undertaken online with Australian Catholic University.

The courses combine theory, evidence-based practice and research enabling the registered nurse to qualify with an exceptional standard of professional evidenced-based practice, skills and knowledge in their chosen specialty.

La Trobe University

A Master of Nursing (Intensive-Care) is offered in 2017. This course is run by Latrobe University in collaboration with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

The University of Melbourne

Graduate Certificate in Nursing Practice (Cancer & Palliative Care) is offered in 2017. This course is run by The University of Melbourne in conjunction with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Eligibility for Post Graduate Programs

Nurses registered as a Division One Nurse with AHPRA are eligible to apply. Candidates must have at least one year experience in the acute care sector and considerable experience in the area of specialty they are applying for.

Education Support

Each specialty is supported by a specialist Education Consultant, Clinical Coach or Clinical Support Nurse. Education Consultants play a vital role in the development and facilitation of the courses organising and delivering the education sessions whilst supporting the students in the clinical environment. Clinical Coaches and Resource Nurses are clinically based and act as mentors and role models to guide and support the students to achieve best clinical practice. All of our Post Graduate courses offer an amount of supernumerary time within the specialised areas.

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne also offers extensive education programs, in-service education, twilights and short courses that are of no cost to our staff.

Scholarships
Integral to the pursuit of continuous quality improvement of patient care is the support of ongoing education and development of hospital staff. St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne offers a limited number of scholarships for candidates wanting to develop their academic and clinical skills in the Post Graduate programs.

Application Process

Post Graduate positions for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing in the different specialties are advertised internally and externally by St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne in August/September each year.

• A covering letter
• Succinct Curriculum Vitae with two referees, one of whom must be from the clinical area
