Our gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary unit offers highly specialised services including gastroenterology, colorectal, hepatobiliary and general surgery.
Our team comprises specialist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. We have a resident doctor appointed to this unit who can liaise with your specialist to make sure you get optimal care. In addition, many of our surgeons have consulting suites on site.
Stomal specialist care
We provide specialised care to people with stomas.
A stoma is a surgically created opening from either the bladder or bowel onto the abdomen. It provides an exit point for urine or faeces.
Our stomal therapist is a specialist nurse trained to address the physical and emotional needs of people who require surgery that then requires the formation of a stoma.
We organise a preadmission consultation to ensure that you and your family understand the surgery and to make realistic plans for your discharge.
After your operation the stomal therapist will teach you how to care for your stoma. A suitable appliance (bag) will be chosen and you will become a member of an ostomy association. The cost of stoma appliances is fully subsidised by the Federal Government.
Follow-up appointments are available after discharge, with ongoing support.
